Happy 95th Birthday #MelinaMercouri - with a Google Doodle Tribute highlighting her #ParthenonSculptures Campaign! Did we inspire Google? We hope so!

Today's Google Doodle Tribute to Greece's amazing Melina Mercouri and her campaign for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures
Ευχαριστούμε!
Thank you Google!

We were thrilled to wake up to this Google Doodle today and honoured that we may well have played a small part in bringing it about when we wrote to Google suggesting something similar for the 20th anniversary of her death.

They didn't do it then but they've done it now to celebrate the 95th Anniversary of her birth and her campaign for the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures to Greece.

Did we inspire Google? We hope so!

Here is a copy of our email

To: Google
From: Global Greek World
Date: 18 February 2014

We were reading through the Google lists and saw that the public can submit proposals for Doodles... so here goes.

On 6th March it will be 20 years since Melina Mercouri,  Greece's famous actress and Minister of Culture died...

Melina Mercouri is the one who started up the campaign for the repatriation of the Parthenon Sculptures stolen by Elgin, and the creation of the new Acropolis Museum in Athens to house them. Melina even had provision made to keep one hall for them until they return. This hall has white plaster copies of the stolen artefacts to highlight the difference with the originals at the British Museum.

Since George Clooney has now stepped into the fray and the debate on the side of Greece, it might make a fantastic doodle...a Parthenon doodle, with the Parthenon Sculptures, Melina, Jules Dassin,  George Clooney, the New Acropolis Museum and the Acropolis hill...

How about it? Have we inspired you?

Please consider it!

Palazzo Papadopoli: the Greek Connection at George Clooney's Wedding in Venice

The seven star Aman Grande which opened last year in the 450 year old Palazzo Papadopoli,
the setting for the wedding reception of George Clooney and Amal Alamuddin

George Clooney, the world's most sought after bachelor, gets ready to relinquish his title as he ties the knot with British-Lebanese human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin on Saturday in Venice, possibly the most romantic city in Italy.

And the party? Well, that's going to be at the Palazzo Papadopoli ...

Yes, you guessed correctly, Papadopoli as in Papadopoulos...the Italian version of the most common Greek name ever!

The Palazzo Papadopoli was built in the 1550's, and is an opulent Renaissance style palace, with rooms bedecked with magnificent paintings and historic wall frescoes.

In 1864, Counts Nicholas and Angelo Papadopoulos, who had come from Corfu (Kerkyra) in Greece, chose this stunning palace for the Papadopoulos family HQ in Venice.

Just one of the magnificent reception rooms of the Palazzo Papadopoli

George and Amal,
Kala Stefana!

Our best wishes to to you both for a long and blessed life together!!
Να ζήσετε!

PS We particularly like this couple because they have taken up a cause very dear to our hearts, and the hearts of all Global Greeks:
the Return of the Parthenon Sculptures!

Bringing Home the Parthenon Sculptures: Sonia Theodoridou and Six Modern Day Caryatids Raise Awareness for their Return

Sonia Theodoridou and the six caryatids
Danae Filippa, Efstratia Hioti, Natalia Margomenou, Marina Triantafillou, Katerina Kakouri, Katerina Hintiraki, find their long lost sister...
a touching moment indeed.

On Saturday 7th of June 2014, Greece had its moment literally inside the Lion's Den - London's British Museum, when renowned Greek Soprano ΣΟΝΙΑ ΘΕΟΔΩΡΙΔΟΥ - SONIA THEODORIDOU together with six caryatids went to meet the one caryatid who is still separated from her sisters...

The reception was overwhelming, from the streets to the people who were visiting the museum, the emotion was palpable, many were moved to tears, including the security guards who were hostile at first...

 The journey begins in Athens...

On the London Underground on the way to the museum...

In the British Museum
Greek harmony...
The Niriidon Monument, stolen from Xantho in Lyceia

In front of the stolen Parthenon Sculptures
A
moving moment...

 Greek harmony in motion...

Leaving the museum after the triumph...

Hyde Park:
Calling all people to stand in solidarity with Greece's Pilgrimage

As Sonia Theodoridou posted on her page on Facebook...

The video below is from the very moving performance given by our modern day Caryatids outside St Sophia Greek Orthodox Church in Bayswater, on Monday 9th June, the Feast of the Holy Spirit - Του Αγίου Πνεύματος

Bravo Sonia,
Bravo Theodore,

Bravo Elda,
Bravo  Danae, Efstratia, Natalia, Marina, Katerina, Katerina
Bravo to all those involved in this initiative!

It just proves that each of our Global Greeks are the best Ambassadors Greece has.

It just proves that every little bit helps.
Big oaks from little acorns grow,
and anything each one of us who believes in this noble cause can do,
is great for this holy pilgrimage started by Melina Mercouri

and continued every single day by all those of us who believe in it...
The Acropolis Museum has just had its 5th Birthday...
It has been waiting 5 years already...
5 long years
Each spot is ready and waiting...

Let's Just do it!
Let's ALL help Bring them Back!

Thanks for Your Help George Clooney! Let's Bring the Parthenon Sculptures HOME!

Go to the British Museum and see the STOLEN Parthenon sculptures, then come to Greece and see why they have to come home...

Accept the Greek Culture Minister's invitation to visit Greece's unique archaeological sites and  The Monuments Men, will take on a whole new dimension!

Oh and by the way, the next time the Brits talk about the 'Elgin' Marbles, please remind them of one little thing they want to forget...

  that Elgin STOLE them...
There are no such things as the 'Elgin' Marbles.

'There is a Michael Angelo David.
There is a Da Vinci Venus.
There is a Praxitelles Hermes.
There is a Turner ‘Fishermen at Sea’.
There are no Elgin Marbles!'

Melina Mercouri,
Minister of Culture, Greece
in her speech to the Oxford Union  in 1986

There are NO Elgin Marbles.

Elgin STOLE them from the Parthenon.

They are the PARTHENON Marbles.

The PARTHENON Sculptures.

Dear David Cameron, Elgin STOLE them, They are NOT the Elgin Marbles

Dear British Prime Minister, David Cameron,

Let's get it straight...
Elgin STOLE them, they are NOT the Elgin Marbles.
The sculptures held captive in the British Museum are
the PARTHENON Marbles

You cannot change the past, what's done is done.

But you CAN do something about the future,
You CAN change the present.

Do what's right.
Return the PARTHENON sculptures to their rightful home,
Return the PARTHENON Sculptures to Greece.

who left us 19 years ago today,
 on March 6, 1994.

She never accepted this abhorrent term,
said the following:

There are no such things as the Elgin Marbles.
There is a Michael Angelo David.
There is a Da Vinci Venus.
There is a Praxitelles Hermes.
There is a Turner ‘Fishermen at Sea’.
There are no Elgin Marbles!

Global Greeks at Work: If Elgin was in....

They say that a Picture is Worth a Thousand Words...

It took two of our Global Greeks,Alexis Mantheakis and Ares Kalogeropoulos, both born and raised outside Greece,to get together and mastermind this marvellous series of pictures titled If Elgin was in... driving the point home much more emphatically than thousands of words ever could.

Direct and with impact, the reaction when we posted these pictures on our Facebook Page was instant and overwhelmingly positive!

....unfortunately, and we all know the disastrous results of Elgin's stay in Athens - the unprecedented destruction of the monument in order to rip the sculptures from their natural home and transport them to England.

However the sculptures have 'spoken', and their message is loud and clear...

Bravo Ares and Alexis! Messages like this inspire us...to spread the word around the world!

This campaign is one of many especially aimed at the British Museum, which steadfastly refuses to part with the sculptures ripped from their original home by the not-so-noble Lord Elgin...

About the creators:

Ares Kalogeropoulos, one of our Global Greeks living in Germany, is the creator of the I AM GREEK AND I WANT TO GO HOME movement, an independent movement for repatriation of the magnificent statues and sculptures plundered in days gone by and now held 'hostage' in various museums around the world.

Alexis Mantheakis, born in East Africa and now living in Greece, is Chairman of the International Parthenon Sculptures Action Committee Inc (NZ),  a movement which started on Facebook for the repatriation of the Parthenon Sculptures.

As Global Greek World, we are pleased to be part of the IPSACI movement from the very first day, supporting Greece's just demand for the return home of these unique works of art pillaged by Elgin and which remain imprisoned at the British Museum...

Photo of the Day: Greece's Answer to British PM David Cameron

Closing England's borders to Greeks?
Start by deporting one of the most famous,
the Caryatid held hostage at the British Museum.

One resourceful Greek's answer to David Cameron's 'Greek' comments
set the social media on fire this week.
Author Unknown:We don't know who he or she is but we'd love to!

Earlier this week, Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron, despite the position he holds, displayed a remarkable and unbelievable lack of diplomacy along with a deplorable lack of knowledge of history, solidarity and EU laws thus earning himself and his nation an offical reprimand from the Greek government who summoned British Ambassador Dr David Landsman for explanations.

Making incendiary statements designed to appease his right wing element and the euro sceptics, David Cameron who as PM of a country in the EU, singles out the Greeks as his major problem, when the UK has so many millions of immigrants from every corner of the world - legal or otherwise - that tap its resourcesm, hoping that by so doing he will keep Britain 'safe'.

Every country needs to protect itself but by making one of those countries the focus, it implies a racism which is not at all appropriate or seemly for a fellow EU member, and particularly hypocritical considering Britain is not even in the Eurozone.

In fact, it is worth questioning why he persists in making comments that relate to Greece  leaving the Eurozone, when the Greek people quite clearly voted against such a move on June 17?

In so doing he picked a major fight with Greece, the 'racist' comments on closing the UK's borders, specifically to immigrating Greeks but of course any other Europeans who would leave the Eurozone or the EU, not sitting very well with the people of Greece.

Nick Malkoutzis, editor of the English language Kathimerini was quick to respond with his article 'Why are you afraid of the Greeks, Mr Cameron?'

Such comments came from the Prime Minister of a country which enjoys so many  benefits because of the Greeks - the stolen Parthenon Sculptures which have people flocking to the British Museum, huge investments in property, a very lucrative Greek Shipping centre, bank deposits of many wealthy Greeks, and the hefty fees paid by thousands of Greek students at UK  universities are but a few of the 'Greek fringe benefits'. Even Queen Elizabeth, the reigning monarch has just celebrated 60 years on  the throne with a 'Greek' at her side (Prince Philip is Prince Philip of Greece for those who don't know).

Coming just weeks before the London Olympics begin and as the Olympic Flame, the symbol of peace and friendship, is carried by young and old from one end of the UK to the other, David Cameron's comments were insensitive to say the least! We wonder just how he plans to open the Games later this month? By condemning Greece, the country which gave them to the world?

Whilst we don't think he actually said he was going to deport Greeks, he did speak about closing the borders to Greeks and he got his answer very quickly indeed: the stolen Caryatid being held 'hostage' in the British Museum spoke out loudly and along with our exiled Caryatid, so did every single Greek in every corner of our Global Greek World, seizing the opportunity to drive home once again the issue of repatriating the Parthenon Sculptures.

The British PM is caught between the devil and the deep blue sea, we know...

The UK, incredibly, is in a recession during an Olympic Year! Bank scandals have broken out one after the other, and now a rate fixing scandal explodes at Barclays.

Being Prime Minister of a country however implies an ability to lead and take decisions that will steer the country out of any crisis. Bypassing EU treaties  and making empty populist threats against a fellow EU member (whose people incidentally are not exactly breaking down your doors to get in),  in order to take your people's minds off their domestic troubles, well frankly, that has nothing to do with real leadership and has everything to do with short sightedness and a complete lack of global perspective and insight.

Sir Winston Churchill must be turning in his grave.

Athens' New Acropolis Museum:3 Today and Still Waiting for the Parthenon Sculptures! Let's Bring them HOME!

Χρόνια Πολλά!
 Athens' New Acropolis Museum
inaugurated on 20 June 2009 turns 3 today
and is still waiting for the Parthenon Sculptures...

The magnificent marble sculptures plundered from the Parthenon by the infamous Lord Elgin and held hostage by the British Museum

Let's join every single person around the world - Greek and non-Greek alike - working to bring them home...

Last week, British Actor Stephen Fry and MP Andrew George, speaking in favour of their return, won the debate hosted by Intelligence Squared in Cambridge by a large majority.

Yesterday and today, an
International colloquy in London on the reunification of the Parthenon Marbles

was held at London's Hellenic Centre

The momentum is growing...

There is no excuse anymore

We have built the Museum...

Each missing sculpture has its own space...

Each space is a missing word in the story...

the beautiful story of the Parthenon

the temple dedicated to the Goddess Athena

The Caryatids are waiting for their long-lost sister...

Let's Bring them Home!

It is the least we can do...
we owe it to our children , the future
and to Melina, whose vision for the Parthenon Sculptures put the wheels in motion for their return!

If you ask me whether I will be alive when the Marbles return to Greece,
I tell you, yes, I will be.

When the Sculptures come home to Athens, so will I,
But even if I'm not,
I will be reborn.

WE DID IT! They're Coming Home At Last!!!

Well, we didn't realise that our Global Greek World blog is so widely read!

Minutes after publication of the Open Letter he received which we published just yesterday, Number 10 Downing Street made a surprise and unexpected announcement early this morning.

In an exclusive letter addressed to us at Global Greek World, which he has asked us not to release first, British Prime Minister David Cameron gave the thumbs up to the return of the Parthenon Sculptures as a special sign of solidarity and support for the suffering people of Greece, and in deference to those of us who have worked so hard for this noble cause.

In his letter, dated April 1, 2012, PM Cameron apologises for his country's exceedingly selfish and egotistical behaviour and advises that he has given instructions to the British Museum to start the lengthy process of preparation for Repatriation of the Marbles so that they can be in Greece in time for the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony. Mr Cameron also announced that the first sculpture which will be coming home to Greece is the Caryatid, who will be set free to join her sisters at the New Acropolis Museum in time for the 3rd birthday celebrations.

In his letter Mr Cameron said he agrees with Stephen Fry and he looks forward to coming to Greece after the Olympics so that he can see the Parthenon Sculptures in their home. He  is also looking forward to meeting up with his idol, former Greek Minister of Culture Melina Mercouri who had said that she will be reborn when the Marbles come home...

As a bonus to the Greek people, the British Prime Minister announced that Britain will soon be taking in 500,000 of Greece's illegal immigrants from former colonies, Ghana, Nigeria, India and Pakistan and that he will shortly be releasing details of a plan for British troops to leave another former British Colony, Cyprus, adding that he will personally be visiting Turkey to convince Turkish prime Minister Erdogan that it is time for the occupying Turkish troops to leave too.

Details of the Prime Minister's decision will shortly be available on the Number 10 official website

.
.
.

And then we woke up from our wonderful dream...How we wish this was true!

As it is now after midday in most parts of the world we can reveal that this was our April Fool's joke - no doubt you realised it quite early on, it was just TOO good to be true, unfortunately!

Our cause, the Repatriation of the Parthenon Marbles is very noble indeed and we tried in our own humble way to use the tool of satire which our ancestors had mastered to perfection using the freedom afforded them by that satire. to draw attention to major issues such as this... there was no intention to offend anyone's sensitivities.

The dig is quite obviously aimed at those who are keeping the Parthenon Marbles imprisoned and away from the land of their birth.

We remain hopeful that that will soon change and that all our efforts combined as well as the Open Letter to David Cameron published yesterday will have the desired result.
