Helenic? What's that? GEEK Passports Only!

“You have told me that your nationality is Greek but your passport shows you are Helenic citizen. There is not any country in Europeon Union called Hellas? 

Please tell me why you do not have a Geek passport.”

In what was an official request in an official document issued by the Manchester Authorities, and in a paragraph containing just 38 words, 3 of them are spelt incorrectly and the syntax leaves a lot to be desired!

Nick the self-taught Archaeologist...

Italian scientists digging near Rome dug to a depth of 10 meters, found traces of copper wire connecting houses in an ancient village and came to the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 2000 years ago.

Not to be outdone by the Italians, in the weeks that followed Turkish scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters. Shortly thereafter, headlines in Turkish newspapers read: "Turkish archaeologists have found traces of copper wire connecting the ruins of an ancient village and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network five hundred years earlier than the Italians."

One week later "The Kathimerini", a Greek national newspaper, reported the following: "After digging as deep as 50 meters in fields near Athens, Nick Papadopoulos, a self-taught archaeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing. Nick has therefore concluded that 3000 years ago Greeks were already using wireless and that the Ancient Greeks invented WiFi, because as we all know...

 September 27 is known as World Tourism Day, and as always is a great opportunity to promote our beautiful Greece - the Ultimate Tourist Destination! 

Here at Global Greek World it is the day we launch our Greek Photo Competition every year on our Global Greek World Facebook Page to showcase this magnificent country of ours.

So here goes! 

We've set up the album for 2016, now it is over to YOU!

The rules are simple:

Anyone can enter! 

All it takes is a photo that you have taken yourself, anytime, anywhere in Greece that we can add to the album so that people can vote. 

Maximum number of entries per person is 3. 

Send us the photo(s)you would like to enter in the competition either by emailing us directly or by clicking on our Facebook Page, liking it and sending your photo(s) to us via our Facebook Message facility. 

You can send in your favourite photos of Greece until the closing date for entries - Friday 28 October 2016.

You can vote for the picture(s) you like...with a 'like'. 

The picture with the greatest number of 'Likes' when the competition closes (sometime in November) wins....

Giannis and Athanasios Antetokounmpo in their Greek Military Uniform yesterday

A slightly different kind of draft for Greece's amazing NBA players Giannis (Milwaukee Bucks) and Thanassi Antetokounmpo (New York Knicks)! 

Drafted for Military service which is compulsory in Greece for young men over 18, Giannis and Athansios Adetokunbo showed up at Avlona, a military training base outside Athens yesterday to register. 

They are expected to apply for a postponement of service because of sports commitments and will probably serve their time at a later stage. 


Two young men, children of immigrants to Greece who worked hard to give their children a better life.   

Two young men who love Greece ...and never miss an opportunity to show it.

Two young men who tell us how blessed they feel!

Well done boys! 

Can you imagine Giannis as an Evzon in Greece's elite Presidential Guard?  
We can!

Huma Mobin's 'Husband-Less-Honeymoon' in GReece Photo Album goes Viral!

Theoretically this lovely lady should be smiling… but she’s not, even though she is having a great holiday in the best country in the world…

Which country is that? Greece, of course! 

How can someone be in Greece and be unhappy you say? It’s simple. 

If you were planning the trip as a second honeymoon and your other half didn’t get his visa approved, then you have good reason to be a bit sad as you go on your ‘Husband-less Honeymoon’ to Athens, Crete and Santorini.

That’s what happened to Huma Mobin. A creative director at BBDO in Pakistan, she didn’t let the inspiration she had go to waste. 

She decided to create her own ‘Husband-less-Honeymoon-in-Greece’ album with her arm around her ‘in absentia’ husband and share the photos with that other half, and of course, via Facebook, with the rest of the world!

Her pictures have gone viral. We loved her story so we are sharing it and the photos.
